The first tree that was planted was a Mulberry tree that we were removing for the Ward's Island Association's bowling green. Eight or so small children came to protest the removal of this tree because they loved picking the berries. I promised the crying children I would transplant the tree to the wet meadow. 

Since then, the Mulberry tree has grown well and has produced thousands of berries for the community, the wildlife and island visitors. Everyone is welcome to enjoy! That Mulberry tree was such an inspiration that we have planted an entire orchard of native, non-invasive fruit and nut trees and shrubs. 

In the future, I want to plant more large nut trees and keep planting interesting fruit trees. If you're interested in helping out, it would be much appreciated. Time and/or donations are always appreciated. A fruit tree costs as little as $10 and I've had volunteers as young as 7.
